On 27 September 2020, the UAE President, His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, issued Federal Decree-Law No.
14/2020 Amending some provisions of the Commercial Transactions Law promulgated by Federal Law No. 18/1993 Concerning
Commercial Transactions. Federal Decree-Law No. 14/2020 was published in the UAE Official Gazette on 30 September 2020.

The most significant amendments in Federal Decree-Law No. 14/2020, in respect of the regulation of cheques, divide into two
categories.

The first category addresses enhanced rights, from a commercial viewpoint, which increase the effectiveness of cheques as instruments of enforcement.

The second category relates to modifications in applicable criminal consequences in relation to cheques which are wholly or partially dishonoured. The amendments introduced under Federal Decree-Law No. 14/2020 are expressed to be effective as of 2 January 2022.
